The biochar strategy for Namibia, implemented by PyroCCS’ subsidiary PyroNam
I – WHY NAMIBIA?
Massive biomass potential
~15 Mt p.a.
Despite high biomass potential and growth of invasive plants:
Less than 2 Mt are utilized
Farmers produce grill charcoal for export in an environmentally harmful way
Conversion of bush biomass to biochar
Biochar as a soil amendment and carbon removal agent
Financed through carbon credits
II – ABOUT PYRONAM
Biochar solution for Namibia
PyroNam obtains biomass from local farmers, turns it into biochar, using low-tech pyrolysis machines. In doing so, PyroNam is creating income opportunities for farmers, improving fertility of soils and biodiversity in the savanna.
Bush encroachment destroys savanna ecosystems
Degrading soils and desertification are significant
